One of the stand out destinations on the Dixie National Forest is the road over the historical Hell’s Backbone bridge. This dirt road takes you into the ponderosa’s and to the height of the Box Death Hollow Wilderness area. This road was once the primary route for travel from Boulder to Escalante. Pioneers constructed a bridge across a narrow ridge dividing two canyons on either side. A more modern bridge has been constructed on top of the old original one and can still be seen as a witness to the pioneers bravery and ingenuity.
