RUNNER SAFETY

Recognizing that each participant signs a liability waiver, the Escalante Canyons Marathon reserves the right to remove a runner from the course at any time if, in our judgment, the runner’s health or safety or the safety of others may be at risk through continued participation. We will employ EMTs and other safety personnel to ensure that this is done in a careful and respectful way.

RACE ELIGIBILITY

Entries for participants to use bicycles, skates, strollers, baby joggers, roller blades, or to run with pets will not be accepted. However, although we do not have a wheelchair category, we welcome runners with disabilities in all races. As this is a small event, we will make accommodations on a case-by-case basis, within the time constraints of each race. Please contact Mary Parkin (see contact information below) for arrangements.

REFUND POLICY

For registered runners:  The Escalante Canyons Marathon does not offer refunds for any of our race events, including the marathon, half marathon, and 5K.  This is consistent with general long-distance race standards.  Please note that although this is a change from recent policy, it reflects our practice from past years.

If you are unable to participate for any reason, we are happy to offer a one-year registration deferral if requested before the cancellation deadline (see dates below).  Under this policy, your registration will be carried over to next year’s event, and you will not have to re-register.  The deferral will not be applicable to races beyond next year’s event.

We are also happy to offer a transfer of your registration to another runner if notified by the cancellation deadline.

If you cancel for this year and choose not to postpone or transfer your participation, we can send your shirt and race packet to you as long as you are willing to pay the shipping costs.  Again, we must be notified by the cancellation deadline.

If you need to defer, transfer, or cancel your registration, please contact Mary Parkin at mary_parkin@msn.com or by phone or text at 617-417-3331.

For race changes or race cancellation owing to circumstances beyond our control:  It is the primary goal of the Escalante Canyons Marathon to ensure a safe event for all involved, including racers, volunteers, spectators, the community, and other visitors to the region.  Accordingly, we must reserve the right to make race adjustments or cancel the event as weather or other safety/health issues dictate.  If this becomes necessary, we will advise runners individually and through our website and social media in as timely a way as possible.

In this case, we will offer an extended timeframe for deferrals and transfers. For this year’s event, the various options are shown below. Unforeseen circumstances will not be a basis for refunds.

We will always do our utmost to adhere to race schedules and routes. While safety is our pre-eminent concern, the joy of the race is our driving force.

Cancellation and deferral dates for the 2023 race:

  • If initiated by the race participant, requests for deferrals (to the 2024 race) or transfers (for the 2023 race) must be received by October 10, 2023.
  • If the 2023 race is cancelled or changed because of circumstances beyond our control, deferrals or transfers will be available if requested before Labor Day 2024 by contacting race organizers (see contact info for Mary Parkin, above).  A one-time deferral or transfer can be applied to any of the 2024, 2025, or 2026 races (October 12, October 11, or October 10, respectively).
